Nikki and the Robots

Description

"Nikki and the Robots" is a 2-dimensional platformer game where the player controls Nikki, the cute protagonist, who wears a cat/ninja-costume. Nikki's objective is to find all switches in every level and activate them. A central element of the game is, that Nikki can use terminals to control a variety of robots that can be found in the levels. These have to be used to accomplish the different challenges faced in the levels. There are platform robots, cannon robots, jetpack robots and patrol robots.

In the Story Episodes, Nikki embarks on a secret mission to fight Dr. Lacroix, an evil engineering genius who is trying to take over the world. Nikki has to infiltrate Lacroix' secret facilities to free secret agent colleagues who have been captured by the villainous engineer. Luckily for Nikki, Lacroix' secret facilities seem to be crawling with robots...

The style of the game renders homage to the classical platformer games of the 80ies and early 90ies. This contrasts with the gameplay that feels very modern due to the physics-engine and the so-called Überpixel-concept.

History

"Nikki and the Robots" is developed at the Joyride Laboratories, an independent game studio based in Berlin, Germany. The free part of Nikki and the Robots – including the game engine, tutorial levels, a level editor and the possibility to upload and download community levels – was released in an early alpha stage in April 2011. The game has been constantly improved since, and in September 2012 the first Story Episode was released.
